How to keep ants out of your pet’s food
Do you know how to keep ants out of your pet’s food?
Did you know that your pet’s food is a feast for ants? And not only that! They
can easily find the food bowl, and it’s difficult to get rid of them. Well, you know
that, right?
Monello Select’s veterinarian, Luana Sartori, shares some tips with us on how
to keep these tiny insects away from your best friend’s food bowl.
Keep your pet’s food in tightly sealed containers, which will avoid ant
infestations while it is also the best way to store dry food. This is one of the
first steps to prevent ants from invading your home.
Clean your dog or cat’s food bowl really well. Just wiping it with cloth or water
is not enough. Clean it with soap and water, and always make sure that there
are no product remains in the bowl.
The pet’s eating area should also be cleaned with soap and water. With that
you
get rid of the pheromone trail. Pheromone is a substance that ants
produce and that guides other ants through a safe path to the food source.
Chalk is also a widely used trick to keep ants away, did you know that? It is
pretty simple: you just have to create a barrier around the food bowl with the
chalk, by drawing a circle. Ants will not cross this limit. However, you must
control whether the pet will eat the same amount of food as usual, as different
smells can change dog or cat’s routines. The most important is, of course, that
your pet eats as much as it used to.
Another interesting trick is to place the food bowl inside a larger bowl with
water. It does not always work, but many pet owners have approved the idea.
Avoid leaving food available all the time to keep ants and other animals out of
your pet’s food. It is better feeding your pet at specific times, following the
recommendations of a vet you trust.
If none of this works, you can look for some ant-proof pet bowls available in
the marked, specially made to keep ants away. There are a lot of options at
different prices.
Clean up the place where your best friend eats. In addition to making things
more pleasant for the pet, you ward off unwanted pests. The place must be
cleaned daily, as well as water and food bowls
